The Strangers We Know - @pipdrysdale

Anyone who knows me knows when I find an author I like I will happily buy their books when released.

Needless to say I was thrilled when I went into QBD late December and found another of Pip’s books. I’d been introduced to The Sunday Girl in 2020 and read it over the course of a weekend and The Strangers We Know was no different.

SYNOPSIS (spoiler free).

Slightly neurotic Charlie is a part time actress living in London and full time sales assistant.

She is married to the cool and collected Oliver who is a successful businessman who engages in some interesting deals that Charlie isn’t privy to.

Their marriage is perfect but Charlie can never get over her insecurities about Oliver. That is until Charlie sees a photo of Oliver, taken by her on their honeymoon, on a dating app and her life changes forever.

Determined to find out what is going on, she signs up to the app to catch him out, but things start to unfold before her eyes.

I love Pip’s writing and story telling. It’s simplistically complicated and beautifully written with more turns than a maze but also unpredictable which you would know is a huge deterrent.

I loved the way this book was written like a movie, it was broken into different acts which aided in the uniqueness of this wonderful book. I also love the way the title is worked into the book on a few occasions but subtly, only at the end was it written directly but it was very clever.

Initially I thought Strangers was following the same route as The Sunday Girl but I was very wrong, the two books are nothing alike.

If you liked The Sunday Girl then you’ll definitely like The Strangers We Know. I also can’t wait to read Pip’s new book The Paris Affair which is available in March 2021.

💋💋💋 Posted @withregram • @allthebookpag 💋💋💋 Posted @withregram • @allthebookpages Having read both of Pip Drysdale's previous books, The Sunday Girl and Strangers We Know, I had high expectations going into this and I was not disappointed. The Paris Affair delivers a fast-paced, heart-racing psychological thriller that I've come to expect this author but with the charming addition of a Paris setting.

Harper Brown, our crime-podcast obsessed MC, has just moved to Paris in hopes of becoming a serious news reporter. If only she could be rid of egocentric colleagues and find a career-changing story to impress her boss.

After the media hints to a serial killer being on the loose, Harper finds herself uncovering secrets that could solve the murders and give Harper the story she desperately needs - if she isn't caught by the killer first!

Harper was such a fun character to read. She was so bold and brazen, and I found my heart racing many times as she found herself in various situations and then talked - or broke - her way out of them.

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to review an arc of The Paris Affair. Out February 3rd 🤍

My final read for 2020 was an epic one @pipdrysdale - The Paris Affair. I loved Pip Drysdale’s previous novels, so I was really excited when I was approved to read her latest book before its release date and it did not disappoint. Wow what a great book- it may be my favourite one from @pipdrysdale yet.... I did not want it to end. The book was fast paced and so interesting- I just loved each of the characters and the setting in France. I felt as if I was going along with Harper trying to piece the mystery together and I did not see the twists coming at all. I loved the way Harper was so into True Crime podcasts and how that was put into the story throughout - as it was really relatable. I do not want to say too much more because I don’t want to spoil this book for readers. If you read one book in 2021- make it this one! You will not be disappointed. Cannot wait to see what book you write next @pipdrysdale 🤗

💋💋💋 Posted @withregram • @noshelfrespec 💋💋💋 Posted @withregram • @noshelfrespect I brought The Strangers We Know by @pipdrysdale on my trip to Durham and wow - this book really is a page turner full of suspense 😱.

When Charlie creates a fake profile after seeing her husband on a dating app she begins to uncover a lot more than infidelity. Spiralling into a world of deception and mistrust, I loved following Charlie’s journey to the truth and coming up with my own theories along the way.

I ended up reading this all in one day - I couldn’t want to see what happened next and if our guilty characters would end up getting away with it.

Thanks @bookpublicist and @simonschusteruk for the gifted copy.

RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

SYNOPSIS

🤍Taylor Bishop is hurt and has her heart set on revenge. Her ex, Angus Hollingsworth, a charming, handsome yet narcissistic, manipulative and violent man has just dumped her and publicly humiliated her online. Taylor chances upon a copy of “The Art of War” and devises a plan to exact revenge on Angus.

MY REVIEW
🤍”The Sunday Girl” by @pipdrysdale is a fast-paced and suspenseful psychological thriller which explores domestic violence and poses the questions: Why are women attracted to bad men and is revenge ever a good idea?

🤍 This was a truly “unputdownable” book. Drysdale’s edgy and fast paced writing style had me on the edge of my seat. There were moments where I was too scared to turn the page because I was so anxious about what was going to happen next. “The Art of War” quotes preceding each chapter which foreshadowed Taylor’s plans also added an element of intrigue to the novel.

🤍 The suspense of the novel is also attributable to Drysdale’s strong leading characters and in particular the evil male protagonist Angus. Drysdale concocted a truly malicious and dark yet relatable character; relatable in the sense that I have met men like him and I understand their power and allure. It’s hard to believe that there are men out there like Angus and women willing to put up with them like Taylor. Drysdale cleverly explored why some women do. Taylor’s cheating father shaped Taylor in the sense that he created in her an “endless quest for happy endings for which” she could “endure anything”. Angus was cognitive of this aspect of Taylor’s psyche and took full advantage of it by constantly manipulating and gaslighting her. I found this psychological aspect of the novel both compelling and authentic.

🤍 Drysdale’s other overriding message was that revenge is probably not a good idea because it always comes at a personal cost to the one inflicting it. That cost may involve compromising your moral compass or even jail time.

🤍 I recommend this book to anyone who loves compelling and intriguing psychological thrillers.

TW: Domestic violence.

The Paris Affair - Pip Drysdale
Pub date: 3rd February 2021
🇫🇷🕵🏼
BLURB: Harper Brown is chasing her dreams, she has landed a job in Paris as an arts journalist but dreams of becoming a hard hitting news reporter. She loves true crime podcasts, once wrote a column called ‘How not to get murdered’ and is pretty handy at picking locks. Harper finds herself on the trail of a murderer with possibly the scoop of a lifetime - that may be the key to her dream job. That's if the killer doesn’t catch her first.
🇫🇷👩🏼‍🎨
Wow, wow, wow! Pip Drysdale has created a triumphant psychological thriller that had my heart racing and adrenaline pumping. Bursting with clever twists and turns, the last half of the book had me dashing towards the end to reveal the outcome.
🔎🕵🏼‍♀️
Protagonist Harper Brown is a plucky young woman, a nuanced character of contradictions. She still harbours resentment for the years that she wasted on her now-famous ex, and habitually cyber-stalks him. She knows her way around a dating app but also how to ditch her matches before they get too attached. She’s likeable and relatable, she is full of self doubt and conversely, self assurance. Will this be enough to outsmart a killer?
👱🏼‍♀️👩🏻‍🦰👱🏼‍♂️
Pip Drysdale is a masterful storyteller, The Paris Affair kept me enthralled from beginning to end with it’s fast pace and unexpected plot twists. I have no doubt that it will be every bit as successful as her previous books.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

💋💋💋 Posted @withregram • @mandylovestor 💋💋💋 Posted @withregram • @mandylovestoread I know that this is not out until February next year but I have to tell you all how wonderful The Paris Affair is ❤⁣
⁣
I have loved both of Pip Drysdale's previous books, The Sunday Girl and The Strangers We Know, so I had high hopes for the Paris Affair.  And I am so happy to tell you that it is brilliant! I started reading it late on Saturday night and was still reading in the early hours of Sunday morning.  It is not a book that is easy to stop reading. I just had to know what was going to happen next, what Harper was going to do with the information. I was kinda sad when it was all over. ⁣
⁣
I absolutely loved Harper Brown. She is such a fun character, strong and feisty but inside a wreck.  She has moved to Paris from London for a job as an arts journalist, but she has her eye on the crime desk job. She has a passion for true crime podcasts and practices picking locks in her spare time. She still stalks her ex online and she loves the Paris lifestyle. Her life is about to be turned on its head when she meets Noah X when covering his exhibition for her work.⁣
⁣
This is when the trouble starts. Not going to go into too much detail on the plot, but she discovers more than she bargains for and the people she starts to get involved with have secrets that they would rather stay that way. ⁣
⁣
I will be adding The Paris Affair to the books that I recommend to others. I have pre ordered my physical copy already, due for release in Australia early February 2021.⁣
⁣
A big thank you to @simonschusterau and @netgalley for approving my request for this book - I am sure they could hear my squeals of delight!  All the stars⁣ @pipdrysdale

Posted @withregram • @rebeccamillareditorial 📚THE STRANGERS WE KNOW by Pip Drysdale📚

One of the hardest things to get right in writing is the voice of your characters because they need to feel real. Often writers fall at this hurdle, focusing on the plot and the action. However, that it's all well and good having a plot, but all that hard work is for nothing if the reader doesn't care about the character.

From the very first page, @pipdrysdale's narrator, Charlie in THE STRANGERS WE KNOW is someone the reader cares about. She immediately draws the reader in with her strong but also incredibly vulnerable voice and begins to tell a tale that twists and turns and keeps the reader thoroughly hooked. I think this novel would work so well in audio - I hear Vanessa Kirby as the the narrator in my mind – because it has such a storyteller quality and the plot itself is utterly compelling. The reader is unable to tear their attention away as they have to learn the truth about Charlie's husband Oliver, which ends on a somewhat ambiguous note, asking the reader to question their sense of right and wrong when love is involved.

THE STRANGERS WE KNOW is out now, so of you're looking out for a pyschological thriller transport you this holiday season, you need look no further. Plus, it's the perfect stocking filler for a crime, suspense and thriller fan!

Sammy would like to thank @bookpublicist and @pipdrysdale for the #gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. The verdict? Sammy approved 🐱.
